Naples Tops For Senior Health in the Country

Long considered a top location for retirees, Naples just received yet another honor. The city was just named one of the top locations for senior health in the entire country.

The ranking comes from the Mesothelioma Center. It recently came out with a list of what it considers the “10 Best Cities for Senior Health”, and Naples was number five on the list.

The center credits Naples for having the highest average retirement income. The ranking also points out that at 82 years old, Naples is one of the cities with the highest average life expectancy.

Other things also give Naples a boost, including its top rating for air quality, which is especially important for aging seniors, especially those with lung conditions. As for local healthcare, Naples Community Hospital gets high marks for things like colon cancer surgery and for the treatment of COPD.

More than 117,000 seniors call Naples home. About 32-percent of the city is older than age 65.  Recent estimates suggest about 53-million Americans in total are older than 65. That’s about 16-percent of the total population.

The City of Naples is known for its upscale shopping and dining, plus its proximity to some of the state’s best beaches. As for its senior health ranking, the center based its count on things like average life expectancy, average retirement income and the ratio of seniors to the total population.

Analysts also considered the percentage of seniors with Medicare, the number of senior living centers, the percentage of seniors in poverty and the number of cancer doctors. According to the group, a strong performance is certain categories can also be a strong indicator of a healthy and happy senior population.

Two other Florida locations made the list of the top 10, including Sebastian-Vero Beach at number two. The Villages came in at number six.
